The Poets and the Mundane
I often have random thoughts running through my head, and recently I was suddenly confronted with the desire to achieve having a quiet mind. This led me to contemplate on the times when my mind felt most silent, focused, relaxed...
Still, I wanted to access all these little mental notes and concepts embedded in my subconscious, and it seems I always start by holding clay. The tactile sensation of having clay on my hands becomes a channel that taps my intuitive mind, to find patterns and connections in order to create compositions. These compositions don’t need to mean anything, they’re random abstract visual notes where the brain attempts to create order where there is no order at all.
The Poets and the Mundane is a continuation of my series called Tripping Nature, where my clay modeling and assemblage process is the main subject of the artworks. The act of conjuring random shapes and textures, creating fundamentally familiar images – taking stored information and see how they fit together in new and explorative ways. I am always drawn to my haptic perceptual ability that leads to a meditative process. It is repetitive but results come with variations - a practice of intuitive mindfulness when sculpting automatically becomes a sort of tracing back dreams, or preserving faint memories of interesting things.
