The FUN Stuff: Tiffany Lafuente | MO_Space

In The FUN Stuff, Tiffany Lafuente presents her tableaux of visual comedy, cracking the veneer of everyday life while poking fun at our mundane rituals. An acute observer of human folly, the artist, in her characteristic surreal/pop/psychedelic figuration, approaches painting as a means of exposing our pretensions and machinations—no doubt shaped by the modern emphasis on the aspiration toward affluence.

Domestic objects—here, the accoutrements of wealth—are depicted as signifiers, allowing us to fashion identities and shape how others perceive us. Stuff is not merely background but a cast of characters, as in the paintings within the paintings that spring to life: Ai Weiwei shattering the famous Han Dynasty vase but in a Super Mario setting; elsewhere, a football player and a flower toss a ball between them.

Often staged in opulent interiors, Lafuente’s figures comically perform rituals of civility, though they occasionally tilt toward violence, perversion, or exquisite boredom—always, however, in style. Even our most basic instincts, such as hunger, acquire evocative connotations. These become the masks we wear against larger existential reckonings: the end of love, the loss of vitality and beauty, the certainty of death.

Long drawn to the subtle subversions of the domestic sphere and to the face we present both to ourselves and to others, Lafuente offers a respite from the burden of wearing the mask. Her works ask us to bear our modern inheritance not as a curse but as something to savor, laugh at, and cherish—the fun stuff.
