Levels/Layers: Jacob Lindo | MO_Space

Retracing and reviving previous habits, codes, and tendencies evident in the thought and creative processes of his past works and mediums, Jacob Lindo builds and accumulates strata of oeuvral indices one after the other toward finding new routes in his art-making. In his solo exhibition Levels/Layers, Lindo takes on a diachronic exploration of his artistic practice through the synchronous modalities of collage and the ruse of playful abstraction, exploiting the possibilities and potent shapes within his ludic economy to mine the numinous outcomes that arise from a lyrical system of juxtaposition and collision. The anthropic motif of the totem becomes his central structure in a process almost reminiscent of construction toys and games from childhood. The artist’s fabrication of mock relics with their own cultural logic and self-contained history unapologetically revels in the affordances of deconstruction and intimates an almost primitive logic of understanding one’s reality by leaving a mark, assembling available materials, and tampering surrounding objects and spaces to articulate without the burden of really having to mean.

In this new body of work, we are confronted with the palpable tensions between various mediums and techniques, between the abstract and the figurative, between meaning and wonder, between the ludic impulse of a child’s game and the deliberate ritual attention of art-making. Lindo’s keen and admirable reflexivity and discernment of the contours of his own practice provides a compass for the accretion of pre-existing and readily recognizable forms and figures scrambling toward abstraction as a modality of discovery. Abstraction becomes a delightful but attentive meandering in an attempt at finding and marking a frontier, privileging intuition and serendipity in this forging and fumbling for new grammars. His perceptive generosity of insight despite the persistence on blowing up familiar shapes and figures into seemingly ahistorical nouns and fragments lays out rehearsals of meaning and form that resemble dear little Babel towers, unafraid to embrace a confusion of sounds and gestures, whimsical and bold, unscathed even of the fear to be wrong at times.

There is productive tension between the seeming structural stability and completeness requisite in Lindo’s totemic sculptures and the uncertainty and oddness in his configurations of startled parts; he labors to exorcize meanings and relationships out of the disembodied and sublated figures, and yet exploits their residual connotations, his objects ending up deconstructing sight and thought, teetering in the very act of meaning and becoming. In this new offering that brims with strategic innocence, Lindo deftly excites and agitates form into a bewildered glossary of welcome anomalies.
