ONLY DOG CAN JUDGE ME: Robert Langenegger | MO_Space

There are 120 million views about dogs on social media and 15,000 postings about dogs on Instagram each day. They garner more likes and engagement than most other postings, especially over art stuff. They are omnipresent like God, and like the tattoos that riff off a dead rapper’s song lyrics: “Only God can judge me.” But according to Robert Langenegger, dogs are actually the most qualified to judge humans as creatures that are possessed of pure spirit. Acting on instinct, dog shave not the hatred, avarice, and malice commonly associated with humans. The hazard of being an artist is being inevitably open to judgment: “Being in the art scene and exhibiting artworks is part of your job description to be judged by whomever. The simple fact that you display your works in a gallery invites opinions.” *

He opines further about the stigma of such a cliché that has been massively appropriated by wannabe gangsters; it tries to deflect human agency by only being answerable to some divine power. Woefully, it can’t be said for art, which, despite its pining for transcendence, is a labor wrought from very earthly motives and physiological evolution:

I am fascinated with the process of man-made election in the realm of breeding, be it plants or animals, basically anything that can reproduce sexually. It’s interesting how different breeds evolved to cater to different functions, which in turn were perpetuated because of their innate instincts toward particular tasks. I wanted to try to transpose this idea to the act of painting and making art of all sorts. The reality of the setting of art is highly complex and political in nature, where there is also a sort of evolution taking place. Any person—be it an artist, gallerist, or collector, much more so than the average layman due to their direct involvement in the realm of art—influences via judging which labels art as art. The bigger the backer, the higher chance you get pushed into the limelight and responsibility of being the flagship definition of art. Factors like peer acceptance, gallery success, and institutional recognition ride on the acclaim one gets by putting up works for judging them; if no one really likes them, they are culled out of the scene. The society we live in now demands that time be made into money or else survival is in peril.

Painting and exhibiting [allow] me to produce something sterile compared to the chaos of my everyday existence of racing thoughts, loose ends, and impulsivity. It is a job for me, a fun job nonetheless, but still a job. We have to consider the factors that hold the whole phenomenon [in] place; thus, we must navigate it like a street dog—behold the humble cur that begs for scraps beneath the roadside eatery table. It gives just enough attention for a bone to be thrown its way, but not enough for it to be captured and processed into dog meat.

There are no bad dogs, only bad owners. Same is true in art: there is no bad art, only bad artists.*

On the 7th of April, Saturday at 6 P.M. in the year of the dog, Robert Langenegger opens his solo exhibit in loving tribute to canines, ONLY DOG CAN JUDGE ME, at MO_Space, Bonifacio High Street, Taguig City.

Robert Langenegger

Robert Langenegger (b. 1983, St. Gallen, Switzerland) lives and works in Manila, Philippines. His art has deliberately gone against moral conformity and academic technique, using images as carnivalesque allegory.

Taking up Fine Arts at UP Diliman and Kalayaan College, Langenegger first exhibited his paintings at the artist-run space Big Sky Mind in 2003. By 2008, he was cited as one of the finalists for the Sovereign Art Prize. During that same year his one-man show Irish Bull of the Mother and Child, held at Finale Art File in 2007, was shortlisted for the Ateneo Art Awards. Soon after, his show at MO_Space, ONLY DOG CAN JUDGE ME, was also shortlisted for the Ateneo Art Awards in 2018. His works have been shown in various art galleries in Manila, Malaysia, Australia, Austria, Germany and New York. Through the years, he had various solo exhibitions in both local and international galleries such as Finale Art File in the Philippines and Galerie Zimmermann Kratochwill in Graz, Austria. He participated in group exhibitions as well that showed at Artesan Gallery (Singapore) and Goliath Visual Space in Brooklyn (New York), to name some.
